In doing so, I have neglected to mention one of the station's main functions - to serve as a teaching facility. Each year a handful of field courses are held at QUBS. Most occur in early May and late August, sidestepping the period of high demand by researchers (late May through July). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most recent field course took place from 16-25 February. With the appropriate theme "Winter Ecology and Conservation Biology," Raleigh Robertson led 16 well-bundled students around QUBS to discuss the ways in which organisms survive the (typically) harsh Ontario winter. They spent the first few days exploring a variety of habitats in and around QUBS, as well as the popular "Owl Woods" on Amherst Island. Birders in the group were pleased to see eagles, hawks, harriers, shrikes, owls, and ravens. Those interested in organisms of the aquatic variety got a taste of the Warner Lake Ecological Observatory, a hydrophone array equipped to track the year-round movements of largemouth bass, while the insect-lovers among them could marvel at the freeze-tolerance capacity of invertebrates like the goldenrod gall fly. Out of 37 field courses offered through the &lt;a href="http://bioserv2.mcmaster.ca/oupfb/OUPFB_2007_Module_Listing_Chrono.htm"&gt;Ontario Universities Program in Field Biology&lt;/a&gt;, nearly a quarter (9) will be held at QUBS, with topics ranging from the ecology of reptiles and amphibians to the systematics of flowering plants. Students and professors alike will enjoy plenty of land for hiking, lakes for canoeing, cottages for sleeping, and cooks for meal preparation. A few folks have bothered to point this out via email, leading me to believe this blog doesn't go entirely unread. My excuse - which I think is a good one - is that I've been busy finishing up my Master's thesis. Having successfully defended not too long ago, I am now free to function like a normal human being again. And for a nerd like me, that includes posting about research at QUBS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/347/3770/1600/780997/IMG_0155.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/347/3770/200/21662/IMG_0155.jpg" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;As it happens, this is a perfect time to resume blogging, as I am currently tromping through the snowy forests of QUBS in search of black-capped chickadees. A PhD candidate in my lab - Jenn Foote - is in the midst of her third and final field season studying these hardy little residents, and I am her trusty field assistant. With an interest in communication during the dawn chorus, each spring she records a whole neighbourhood of chickadees simultaneously using 16 widely spaced microphones. That way, she can study the degree to which birds respond to the songs of their neighbours. She can also determine which birds are the leaders, and which birds are the followers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Given that thesis topic, you are probably wondering why on earth Jenn would be at QUBS in the depths of winter. And no - it's not because she just can't bear to part with her feathery friends. Crazy as we birders may be, our presence at QUBS is a purposeful one. It has to do with the leader vs follower conundrum I alluded to earlier. In winter chickadees roam through the woods in flocks of 2-12 individuals. Within each flock there is a well-established dominance hierarchy, such that subordinate individuals make way for their more dominant counterparts - especially when it comes to food resources. Jenn wants to know who these dominant birds are, and whether they correspond to the leaders of the dawn chorus in spring.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/347/3770/1600/6220/IMG_0174.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/347/3770/200/906353/IMG_0174.jpg" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;For insight into these dominance relationships, Jenn baits birds to particular locations by providing seed throughout the winter. She then erects "dominance platforms" (see photo), which consist of a board on which many birds can land, and a seed container from which only one bird can feed. With this set-up, Jenn (and assistants like me) can observe which birds displace others when they are trying to feed. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This technique may sound simple, but is rendered difficult by the fact that interactions take place within the span of a few seconds. During that time the observer must identify the colour-band combination of not one, but two birds, and note which is the more dominant individual. What's more, chickadees are not the only birds to frequent the platforms. They must often wait their turn behind nuthatches, woodpeckers, and the occasional blue jay, so chickadee-chickadee interactions are sometimes few and far between.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Come spring, when the chickadees disband to establish separate breeding territories, Jenn hopes to have observed enough interactions to deduce the dominance hierarchy within each of the wintering flocks. Perhaps that is why many of the same faces return year after year (in some cases decade after decade). Here is a collection of quotes from current and former students, reflecting the (generally) positive feelings about their experience at QUBS:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"I spent 3 glorious field seasons at QUBS working on avian research projects. Right from my first season, I became enthralled with avian research and quickly absorbed all my field assistant training. But QUBS offered me much more than this. I'm not kidding (well, maybe just a little). Built in 1949, this rustic structure was first used by algae researchers as a venue for shaking their samples, allowing the water to drain back into the lake via a hole in the floor. It is located behind the boat house on a rock ledge overlooking Lake Opinicon. The hole has since been covered over, and only the luckiest of graduate students have been privileged enough to call the Shaker home. For 3 glorious months during the summer of 2005, I was just such a student. Imagine waking up to water lapping against your cabin, or lying in bed while looking out over singing loons and soaring osprey! At first glance, helping behavior seems to stand in stark contrast to the notion that evolution is driven by the 'survival of the fittest'. This paradox can be resolved by considering relatedness: individuals may enhance the transmission of their own genes by helping individuals who possess many of the same genes (termed 'inclusive fitness'). Celebrated examples of individuals helping others, with no apparent benefit to themselves, include: (1) birds that help feed young at relatives' nests, and (2) ground squirrels that warn of impending danger when relatives are nearby. In both, inclusive fitness has been invoked to explain the evolution of this otherwise perplexing behavior.     &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From this begs is the question: How do animals know who to help? For sexually monogamous species, the answer comes easily; they should help nestmates. In sexually promiscuous species, however, individuals cannot reliably assume nestmates are siblings, and so require a more direct mechanism for differentiating kin from non-kin. This could be accomplished by evaluating the phenotype of potential kin relative to one's own phenotype, a technique known as self-referent kin recognition.   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bluegill sunfish are an ideal model organism with which to test for an association between promiscuity and the evolution of self-referent kin recognition. Males are either parentals or cuckolders (left and right, respectively, in above photo); the former tend nests and secure most of the paternity, while the latter forgo parental duties and instead sneak sperm into parental nests during spawning. Bluegills may gain inclusive fitness benefits by cooperating with shoal-mates that are kin. During such interactions, parental offspring can reliably assume a certain degree of relatedness with most individuals that originated from the same nest. Cuckolder offspring cannot, so they would benefit more from actively discriminating kin from non-kin using phenotypic cues.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tim Hain - a graduate student from the University of Western Ontario, renowned for his prowess on the dance floor - and his supervisor, Bryan Neff, embarked on a series of elegant experiments to test kin recognition mechanisms in Bluegills from Lake Opinicon. Larvae of known parentage were presented with a choice between two odors originating from broods of varying degrees of relatedness. As predicted, cuckolder offspring were more likely to associate with the odors of relatives, while parental offspring showed no such association. There were around 40 of us in all, with representation from nearly every portion of the department. Notable QUBS 'regulars' in attendance were Caleb Hasler, Rhiannon Davies, Matt Reudink, Susie Crowe, Eric DeLong (aka Yukon), Roz Dakin, Rush Dhillon, Robyn Foote, and, of course, myself. I am pleased to report that the weekend was filled with stimulating intellectual activities. Who am I kidding? We went hiking in the woods, drank beer around a campfire, and had an all-around good time. Our southbound trip brought us to the North American Ornithological Conference, a joint meeting of numerous ornithological societies that is held every 4 years. The QUBS contingent (including both current and former researchers) was extensive - Raleigh Robertson, Laurene Ratcliffe, Dan Mennill, Stephanie Doucet, Ryan Norris, Bridget Stutchbury, Pete Marra, Jason Jones, Scott Tarof, Peter Dunn, Linda Whittingham, Rachel Vallender, Frode Jacobsen, Matt Reudink, Jenn Foote, Kevin Fraser, Lauren Reed, Javier Salgado-Ortiz, Stephanie Hung, Christina Carter, myself, and probably others I am either forgetting or am unaware of. There were many presentations based on research at the station, brief summaries of which can be found below (thanks for the suggestion Bob!). My name is absent from this list because my talk was unfortunately not related to QUBS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/347/3770/1600/NAOC%20photo.0.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/347/3770/400/NAOC%20photo.jpg" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Black-capped Chickadees:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jenn Foote (PhD student at Queen's, sv Laurene Ratcliffe) presented a poster on the utility of an Acoustic Location System (an array of 16 microphones) for studying network communication during the dawn chorus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lauren Reed (MSc student at Windsor, sv Dan Mennill) gave a talk on vocal interactions and territorial movements during song contests, also with the use of an Acoustic Location System.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Tree Swallows:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Raleigh Robertson (Professor at Queen's and former QUBS director) reviewed the state of evidence for various hypotheses surrounding the apparent willingness of females to engage in extra-pair matings, mostly using his long-term study on Tree Swallows at QUBS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;American Redstarts:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt Reudink (PhD student at Queen's, svs Laurene Ratcliffe and Pete Marra) presented a poster on the function of plumage in the acquisition of high-quality habitat in winter, a study that involved fieldwork at QUBS and in Jamaica. Out of 800 eligible posters and talks, Matt was recognized with a student presentation award. Congrats Matt!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Scott Sillett (Research Scientist at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center) gave a talk on annual survival estimates in migratory birds, which incorporated data from the American Redstart population at QUBS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Golden-winged Warblers and Cerulean Warblers:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rachel Vallender (now a postdoc at Cornell) presented a poster on part of her doctoral research at Queen's (sv Raleigh Robertson). She used genetic markers to examine the "purity" of the Golden-winged Warbler population at QUBS, which has been subject to a recent invasion by Blue-winged Warblers. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin Fraser (MSc student at Queen's, sv Laurene Ratcliffe) spoke about the turnover of stable-hydrogen isotopes in claws sampled from Golden-winged Warblers and Cerulean Warblers throughout the breeding season at QUBS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jason Jones (Visiting Assistant Professor at Vassar College) gave 2 talks, one on his own research and the other on behalf of his wife, Jenn Barg. In the first, Jason detailed geographic variation in a suite of population characteristics (age-structure, dispersal, etc.) across the breeding range of Cerulean Warblers. Dozens of birders can be found on any given weekend in spring descending on the mature, sugar maple forest in the Bonwill Tract. With their binoculars in tow, they flock from far and wide to catch a fleeting glimpse of sky-blue plumage high in the canopy. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yet this population is in trouble, at least according to doctoral research conducted by Jason Jones at Queen's University.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jason and his colleagues monitored the Cerulean warbler population at QUBS from 1995-2001. The canopy-dwelling birds were first lured into a mist-net and, while in the hand, they were given with a unique combination of coloured leg bands. The marked individuals were then visited on a regular basis to confirm their continued presence and to monitor their nesting activities, often in multiple years. Using those data, the researchers were able to generate population-level estimates for annual adult survival and fecundity. These basic demographic parameters, for an ecologist, serve as a pulse to monitor the health of a population. The diagnosis: not promising.  The population is what is known as a “sink,” unable to compensate for annual mortality with local productivity alone. The QUBS population is not unique; Ceruleans have been declining in abundance throughout their range. The question is why.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cerulean warblers are notorious for their dependence on contiguous tracts of mature deciduous forest for breeding. The habitat protected by QUBS meets such qualifications - so the question remains, why is this population apparently unable to sustain itself?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Possible answer: the non-breeding period. As migratory birds, Ceruleans are reliant on habitat in disparate geographic locations – on breeding areas, along migration routes, and on wintering areas. The trouble with migration is that habitat limitation in any one of those seasons can act as a population bottleneck. Over the past few decades, Ceruleans have faced a barrage of habitat destruction on their wintering grounds, an altitudinal zone in the Andes of South America that is ideal for coca production. Declines in Cerulean populations have, in part, been blamed on the loss of crucial over-wintering habitat. Direct evidence is lacking, however, because there is a dearth of information on this species in winter. Jason was able to get at this question indirectly using the breeding-season data from QUBS. He found that the vast majority of Ceruleans survive through the breeding season, but only half return to breed the following year. The non-breeding period, which includes both the migratory and over-wintering periods, must therefore be a major source of adult mortality. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That said, we cannot relinquish all responsibility to tropical nations. Low productivity during the breeding season at QUBS could also be blamed for the population's inability to sustain itself. Furthermore, recent surveys in forest patches surrounding the core QUBS habitat indicate that few are host to breeding pairs of Ceruleans. As our population grows and development continues, the importance of setting aside large tracts of contiguous forest (like QUBS) will become even more apparent. Birds and other forest-dwelling creatures will not be the sole beneficiaries. Located along the Rideau Canal, QUBS encompasses 2800 hectares of habitat in the transition zone between the deciduous forest to the south and the boreal forest to the north. Each year, QUBS hosts a wide array of research on fish, snakes, birds, bats, turtles, odonates, moths, and plants. The researchers themselves are nearly as diverse as the organisms they study, drawing from universities across North America and Europe. This vibrant research community lends credit to QUBS' reputation as a primary center for ecological research in Canada.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Why write about research at QUBS?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In short, because I love QUBS! I spent 3 unforgettable summers at the station doing fieldwork on American redstarts (for non-birders, those are small songbirds). In the process, I learned a great deal about the research activities of fellow biologists. This blog will give me the opportunity (i) to learn more about the scientific findings of the QUBS community, and (ii) to communicate those findings to interested readers, especially those who share my love of QUBS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;My Goals:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I aim to update this blog weekly. Each post will include a short summary of a research paper that lists QUBS as a study locale. I will attempt to canvass the broad spectrum of research conducted at the station (i.e. not just bird studies).
